Notes |
- John Hoffman bought also a factory bell in 1845. It called men to labor, volunteers to quench fires, pealed for weddings, tolled for funerals, and called voters to the polls on election day. One night the bell disappeared and could not be found. At last Andrew Borth espied it in an old well on the site of St. Jerome's College, where two workmen had hidden it. Men replaced the bell, and until the 1860's it filled the role of town bell.
