Waterloo-WaterlooMusicalBand-0001-postcardbyJacobDoersam.jpg A c1908 Jacob Doersam postcard uses some early photo manipulation to capture the early 20th-century band. Within a hand-drawn but non-existent bandstand, all 41 WMS band members plus conductor W. Philp have been photographically implanted. Conductor Philp is also more trickery! In Mellor's book, an earlier version of this exact image, titled 1902, shows a different conductor, A.W. Stares, standing on a podium. - DOERSAM POSTCARD, RYCH MILLS |

Notes |
- Death removed another well-known and esteemed citizen in the person of Mr. Jacob Doersam, who died suddenly this morning at 10: 30 o'clock after a brief illness. Although in ill health during the past few months he was able to be up and about until Thursday, since which time he has been confined to his bed. About a week ago he contracted a severe cold which hastened his death, the direct cause of which was a paralytic stroke. The late Mr. Doersam was born in St. Agatha, Aug, 17th, 1853, removing to Waterloo with his parents when a young man. For fourteen years he conducted a cigar store but about six years ago disposed of the business and the past few years carried on a successful book and stationery business on King St.
The late Mr. Doersam, who was of an unassuming disposition, was held in much esteem by his fellow townsmen and a wide circle of friends who will sincerely regret his sudden passing. He was a faithful member of the Lutheran Church.
About twenty-five years ago he was married to Miss Carrie Laibs. After her death he was married to Miss Katharine Merklinger about twenty years ago, who survives, together with the following brothers and sisters: Mrs. Ruthig, Preston; George, Warren, Ill.; Peter, Ayton; John, Saginaw, Mich.; Kate (Mrs. Witmer), Detroit, Mich.; Louisa (Mrs. Hiffler), Rochester, N.Y.; Emma (Mrs. Froehlich), Clinton, Mich.; and Hilda of Waterloo. The funeral will be held at 2: 03 o'clock on Thursday afternoon from the late residence to St. John's Lutheran Church for services and thence to Mount Hope Cemetery for interment.

"Left His country For His Country's Good -- Waterloo Chronicle: Mr Jacob Doersam of Doersam Bros., photographers, left suddenly for parts unknown last Thursday night, but it is supposed he has gone to join the 'great unwashed' in Detroit, leaving many creditors here to mourn his hasty exit. Vive vale Jake."
