- Well known in Twin City business and sports circles, Edgar Jacob Bauer, 71, of 675 Dunbar Rd., died today at St. Mary's Hospital. He had been in failing health since early January.
Mr. Bauer was identified with Bauers Ltd. Waterloo, for more than 50 years, during which time he served as President and general manager for many years and latterly as chairman of the board. Mr Bauer was also president of Globe Furniture Company Ltd. Waterloo, and of the Waterloo Fire Insurance Company, Waterloo. His connection with the Insurance firm dates back to 1925 when he was named a director. He was president of the Waterloo Mutual firm since 1949 until the time of his death.
Mr. Bauer continued a family tradition of public service. He was a Waterloo Alderman from 1922 to 1925. A member of the Waterloo Separate School Board, he also served on the advisory boards of St. Mary's Hospital, St. Jerome's College and the Carmel of St. Joseph, Kitchener. A former president of the Waterloo Chapter of St. Jerome's College Alumni, he was recently appointed honorary chairman of the Bishop of Hamilton Diocesan charity campaign.
Mr. Bauer served as commissioner on the Waterloo Public Utilities Commission from 1947 to 1950 when he retired from public life. A past president of the Waterloo Board of Trade, he was also a member of the Canadian Manufacturers Association and the Waterloo Young Men's Club. Taking an active interest in hockey and baseball in Waterloo for many years, he served in various executive capacities in sporting organizations. Mr. Bauer served in numerous capacities in the interests of church institutions and societies and education. He was a charter member of Kitchener Council Knights of Columbus and the Holy Name Society. He was also a member of the League of the Sacred Heart.
On May 7, 1957, he was made a knight commander of St. Sylvester by the late Pope Pius XII. Born Feb. 10, 1888, in Kitchener (then Berlin), he was the son of the late Aloyes Bauer and the Former Magdalena Kuntz. A resident of Waterloo most of his life, he moved to Kitchener a year ago. For many years a member of St. Louis RC Church Waterloo, he was lately a member of St. John's RC Church Kitchener.
His Marriage to the former Alice Bertha Hayes took place in Waterloo Sept 11, 1912. She survives. Other survivors are six sons, Frank N., Raymond A., and Jerome F. of Waterloo, Robert T. and Eugene R. of Kitchener and Rev. David W. Bauer on the teaching staff of St. Michael's High School Toronto. Also Five daughters, Mrs. E. P. (Mary) Freiburger, Mrs. James (Rita) Huck and Mrs. Joseph (Margaret) Laudenbach, all of Kitchener; Mrs. C. E. (Alice) Schalmz of Preston, and Mrs. Thomas (Therese) Dillon of Levittown N. Y. Two brothers H. A. and J. H. Bauer both of Waterloo, four sisters Antoinette and Lucia Bauer both of Waterloo, Sister M. (Sophia) Stanislaus of St. Joseph's Motherhouse London, Ontario, Thirty nine grandchildren survive. He was predeceased by a sister, Mrs Roman (Rose) Sehl of Waterloo and two brothers Lieut. Wilfred Bauer and Harold Bauer both of Waterloo.
The body is at the Walsh Funeral Home, Waterloo, where the rosary will be recited Sunday at 8 p.m. Prayers will be said at the funeral home Monday at 9: 30 a.m. Removal will be made to St. John's RC Church for reguiem high mass at 10 a.m.. Burial will be in Kitchener Mount Hope Cemetery. Donations to the Carmelite Sisters, Kitchener, or the New Dawn School for Retarded Children will be accepted as tokens of sympathy
