  Fallen Kitchener firefighters 'are here in our memories' Bronze helmet for Gerry Oakley added to memorial during annual ceremony KITCHENER - Gerry Oakley was the kind of firefighter who always made sure his truck was clean and in working order. He was the kind of firefighter who studied all the city streets until they were embedded in his memory so he'd be sure to make it to an emergency as quickly as possible. And, his colleagues say, he was the kind of dedicated firefighter who will be greatly missed. Oakley, 67, died in January from Parkinson's disease, which was related to his occupation, said Kitchener fire Chief Tim Beckett. Oakley had served 34 years with the Kitchener fire department. Oakley was remembered Saturday during the sixth annual Fallen Firefighters Memorial, held at Kitchener's Civic Centre Park on Queen Street North. A bronze helmet in Oakley's name was added to the monument, bringing the total of fallen Kitchener firefighters memorialized to 13. Many of these firefighters died as a result of illnesses believed to be connected to the 1987 chemical fire at Horticultural Technologies.... Survived by his loving wife Judy and his daughter Tanya. Sadly missed by his brother Russ Jr. and his wife Anne and other family and friends. Predeceased by his parents Russ Sr. and Rose Oakley. Honoring Gerry's personal wishes, cremation has taken place.
