Waterloo Executive Dies at 77
Thomas W. Seagram, 77, of 31 Union St. E., Waterloo, prominent Waterloo executive and a son of the founder of Joseph E. Seagram and Sons Ltd., distillers, died Friday at his home after a heart attack.
He was chairman of the board of directors, Canada Barrels and Kegs Ltd., director of Globe Furniture Co. Ltd. and Hespeler St. Mary's Wood Specialties Ltd., Joseph E. Seagram Sons Ltd., and a former director of Waterloo Mutual Fire Insurance Co. and vice-president of Waterloo Trust and Savings Co.
A son of the late Joseph E. Seagram and Stephanie Urbs, he was born at Waterloo and educated at. Lakefield preparatory school and Trinity College, Port Hope. He was employed by the Bank of Montreal at Collingwood and Hamilton from 1906 to 1909 and was part owner of the famous Seagram Stables of Waterloo from 1919 until dissolution In 1933.
The Seagram horses ran many races on Canadian tracks. He was a member of Westmount Golf and Country Club, the Granite Club, Seigorney Club, Waterloo Chamber Commerce, and a director of Freeport Sanatorium. He attended the Church of the Holy Saviour, Waterloo. He joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force as paymaster of the 118th Battalion in 1915 and served in France as captain with the 4th Machine Gun Battalion. He was a major in the Canadian officers reserve.
Surviving besides his wife, the former Dorothy Pearson, are son, Thomas B. of Waterloo; a daughter, Mrs. Fenner (Stephanie) Douglas of Ottawa, and six grandchildren. He was predeceased by three brothers, Edward, Norman and Joseph, and a sister, Mrs. Adine Bowlby.
The funeral will be Monday at Holy Saviour Anglican Church. The body will be at the residence from Sunday noon. Contributions to the rector's fund of the Church of the Holy Saviour and the Canadian Diabetic Society will be accepted as expressions of sympathy.
