- A Little Girl Accidently Shoots Her Brother
A report has been received here this morning of a very sad shooting accident that occurred last evening in Waterloo. It appears that a young man named Geo. Kuntz of Detroit arrived in Waterloo last evening on a visit to his sister Mrs. Jacob Huber, wife of Mr. Huber, the painter, and after tea was taking some things from his valise in the dining-room. Among other articles he took out was a loaded revolver which he laid on a table. In the room were a little neice and nephew who were interested spectatori of the unpacking. Having often played about the house with an old pistol belonging to their father, the little girl picked up the uncle's revolver off the table and in play, cocked it, pointed it at her brother and fired, and sad to relate, inflicted a wound which will in all likelihood prove fatal. The ball struck the boy first on the thumb and glancing off, entered his abdomen. The horror-stricken young man and distracted mother quickly summoned medical aid but the physician called in, at once saw it was likely to prove a hopeless case, though everything possible was done to save the unfortunate boy. At time of writing this he was very low.
The practice of carrying a loaded revolver or having one lying carelessly about in a house is the source of many accidents of a most lamentable nature. We are sure the young man in this case will always regret the possession of that fatal revolver, and this likely fatal accident should prove a warning to all who delight in the carrying of firearms, a practice far too common in this peaceful land.
