Notes |
- JACOB NAHRGANG JOINS THE SILENT MAJORITY.
One by one the old pioneers of Waterloo pass over to silent majority. Another crossed the bourne from whence there is no return early yesterday morning in the person of Jacob Nahrgang who has been a resident of Waterloo since 1850. For nearly 57 years he had lived here and had seen the ups and downs of the town that he had chosen as his adopted home after his arrival from the Vaterland. He was a mason by trade and many of the old brick structures in town remain as a monument to his industry and skill.
The late Mr. Nahrgang was in Lihrbach, Grand Duchy, Hessen, on Feb 27, 1824 and had entered upon his 84th year.
In 1850 he emigrated to America and came straight to Waterloo. For 48 years he lived about a mile north of the town on what is properly known as Buck's Hill. In 1851 he was married to Anna Catharine Kuhl. Their union was blessed with three sons of whom one died in 1876. After his wife's death on Feb. 13, 1900, deceased lived with his son in town, until a few months ago when he went to live with his son Henry, near his old homestead north of Waterloo. Here he was called away, as stated above, at 7 o'clock yesterday morning, at the ripe age of 83 years and 8 days.
The funeral will take place on Sunday afternoon at 1.30 p. m. from the residence of his son Henry to St. John's Lutheran Church and Mount Hope cemetery.
Two sons, John and Henry, both of Waterloo, and six grandchildren survive. Deceased selected as text for his funeral sermon Job. 16-22.
