Notes |
- Rev. John C. Miller, whose death was reported in Wednesday's Advertiser, was one of the pioneers of Upper Woolwich. When he first reached Woolwich sixty years ago there was only one house in what is now Elmira. The subject of this sketch was born in Baden, Germany, and came to Canada with his parents in 1845. In 1849 he married Catherine Weiss with whom he had 15 children. Seven of these together with their mother are dead. The remaining ones are John W., Louis W., Mrs. John Wagner, Mrs. Jacob Bird, Mrs. George Edler, Mrs. Chas. Bergman, Mrs. Herman Hass and Mrs. Samuel Umbach, all residing within 5 miles, we judge, from the old homestead now occupied by the son Louis. Deceased was a strong, robust hard working man, a good type of the early pioneers, who had to hew out homes for themselves in the primeval forest. He was a plain honest man, who loved truth and right. He was a jealous member of the Evangelical Association and a local preacher from 1859 till the infirmities of old age forced him to relinquish that work. On Friday afternoon his earthly remains were conveyed to their last resting place in the Evangelical cemetery, Upper Woolwich, and a large concourse of friends and neighbors gathered to pay a last tribute of respect to his memory.
