McLaughlin House |
- The McLaughlin House was built by local carpenter and Deputy Fire Chief Conrad Fenner in 1867.
Frame houses of this age are relatively rare in local urban settings since brick houses were encouraged by the enactment of fire regulations restricting wooden construction. The three-bay home, which stands on a foundation of granite fieldstone, has a central hall and balanced fenestration. The entrance is highlighted by a classical pediment, tympanum and fluted half columns which frame the paneled front door. The plank construction of the house is evident in the attic. Fenner, a talented joiner, enlarged the building from one-and-a-half to two-stories in 1886. Evidence of the change may be seen in the diagonal cuts on each of the four vertical corner trim pieces where they were spliced to accommodate the second storey. Vertical boards, two inches by twenty one inches are nailed to the horizontal ones. Siding covers the planks on the exterior, while lath and plaster does the same on the interior.
The west, north and south facades of the McLaughlin house, was designated as a well preserved example of wooden construction.1a

Notes |
- Passed Away in His 82nd Year
The death occurred at six o'clock Tuesday evening of Mr. Conrad Fenner, one of Waterloo's well known and respected residents in his 82nd year.
The late Conrad Fenner was born in Germany and came to Canada when a young man. For the past 55 years he has been a faithful employee at Seagram's distillery. He is survived by a wife, four sons and three daughters, namely, Henry, Jacob and Albert, all of Waterloo; John of Hamilton, Mrs. John Schnarr and Dorra and Katie at home; also a brother, John of Walkerton, and two sisters, Mrs. Daub. Detroit, and Mrs. Becker of Waterloo.
Many sorrowing friends and relatives attended the funeral of the late Con. Penner, which took place Priday afternoon from his late residence on Menno street. A short service was conducted at the house, after which an imppressive service was conducted at the St. John's Lutheran church by the pastor, Rev. E. Bockelman. Interment took place in Mount Hope cemetery. Among the floral offerings received were a wreath from the employees of Seagram's distillery, pillow from family and spray from the grandchildren.
