Notes |
- SHIELDS, ROSS LESTER was born in Toronto, a son of Mr. and Mrs. John B, Shields. He graduated from the University of Toronto in 1911 and interned at the Brooklyn General Hospital.
Following his internship he practised in Port Hope until 1914 when he left with the first group of Canadian physicians to join the Royal Army Medical Corps. He served in Egypt, Malta and Salonika, later transferring to the Royal Canadian Medical Corps. He returned to Canada in 1918.
He was registrar at Christie Street Hospital, Toronto until he moved to Kitchener.
His card was in the Daily Telegraph on July 19, 1921:
Dr. R. L. Shields wishes to announce that he has purchased the practice of Dr. G. E. Chapman, who is not resuming practice in Kitchener, and whose office will be closed on July 15th, from which date Dr. Shields will be at his own office, 356 King Street West.
His service in the Mediterranean area left him with a legacy of ill health, but in spite of this limitation, he built up a substantial practice. In 1925 he was offered a position at the Mutual Life Assurance Co., which was much more suitable for him, and from that time he remained in that position.
He was interested in baseball and golf, but as his health deteriorated he was forced to limit his activities. He died on October 17, 1948 from a coronary occlusion in his 60th year. He was survived by his widow, three daughters and two brothers, one of whom being Dr. Harry Shields, of Toronto.
