- BATTE, Rev. Louis, CR-At St. Mary's Hospital, Kitchener, on Sunday, March 31, 1991, in his 93rd year.
Father Louis Batte, CR, had been the oldest member of the Ontario Kentucky Province of the Congregation of the Resurrection. Until his recent stay in hospital, he had been residing at Resurrection Manor, Waterloo, Ont. Father Batte was born at Mount Forest, Ont., but grew up in Walkerton, Ont., where he received his early education. He finished his high school at St. Jerome's Kitchener and then entered the Novitiate of the Congregation of the Resurrection, professing his first vows in 1919. He studied at St. Louis University, St. Louis, Mo. and at the Gregorian University in Rome, Italy. He was ordained a priest August 9, 1925 in Rome. His first assignment was to St. Mary's Parish, Kitchener, besides spending many years as the Master of Novices for the congregation. Father Louis also served at St. Mary's College, St. Mary, Ky. and did parish ministry at the following parishes: St. Cecilia and resurrection parishes, Louisville, Ky., St. Joseph's Parish, Hamilton, Ont., St Louis Parish, Waterloo, St. Teresa Parish, Burmuda, Holy Family Parish, New Hamburg, St.. Aloysius Parish, Kitchener and Immaculate Conception Parish, Formosa, Ont.
Predeceased by his parents, Lawrence and Annie Batte (nee Meyer) and by sister and brother-in-law, Cecilia and Herbert Zister.
He is survived by three nephews, James and Anna May Zister, Harold and Caroline Zister and Louis and Sharon Zister and their families of Kitchener-Waterloo.
Visitation at the Schrieter-Sandrock Funeral Home and Chapel, 51 Benton at Church St., Kitchener, after 7 p.m. tonight (Monday). Visitation will continue until 4 p.m. Tuesday, when transfer will be made to St. Louis RC Church, Waterloo for further visitation with Community Wake Service at 8 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated by the Very Rev. Sutherland MacDonald, CR, on Wednesday, April 3 at 11 a.m. Interment in the Congregation Community Plot of Kitchener Mount Hope cemetery.
Donations to the Bolivian Missions, 38 Greensview Drive, Kitchener N2G 3W6 would be appreciated as expressions of sympathy.
