Notes |
- The Walper House Cigar Store.
Tennyson wrote of the brook "For men may come and men may go: But I go on forever." A parody on this applied to the Berlin Cigar Store in the Walper House block would read: "For stores may come and stores may go; But I go on forever." The Walper House stand is the oldest cigar store in town and retains its popularity with all classes. Its central position probably has something logo with this but the man behind the gun" or "counter" in this case has much more to do with it. Since August 1907, this man has been Mr. L. A. Meblenbacher or "Alf" as he is more generally known. Mr. Mehlenbacher is cigar man from the ground up He was, for ten years prior to taking hold of the store, on the road for Mr. Fred Keil, the well-known Waterloo cigar manufacturer and latterly has returned to his first love, leaving the store in charge his son, Bruce. Bruce, by way, who seems to be a chip off old block, dispenses excellent cigars and tobacco with the ease and grace of a veteran. At no time has this store been better stocked with every popular brand of cigars and tobaccos. The lover of the weed can find anything here that his fancy dictates, either in the line of smokers' sundries or the weed itself. Customers invariably get what they want, and, combined with courteous treatment from the men in charge, makes a host of satisfied patrons who are the best any store can have.
