- Partner remembers victim of Kitchener house fire as a 'lovely lady'
KITCHENER Ole Olsen remembers his girlfriend Ann Paleczny as a woman who adored animals.
"If we were driving on a country road and she saw a sheep or a cow, we would have to stop to say 'hello,'" Olsen said with a laugh.
Paleczny, 67, was identified by police on Thursday as the victim of an early Monday morning house fire in Kitchener.
She was rescued from her home and taken to St. Mary's General Hospital where she died of smoke inhalation, Waterloo Regional Police said Thursday.
Olsen said he went to visit Paleczny the night before because she was feeling a bit ill. He spent a few hours with her and tried to convince her to go to the hospital. She didn't want to go so Olsen said he would pick her up Monday morning to take her to see a doctor.
That morning he arrived at Paleczny's house to a devastating scene.
"I saw the fire trucks and then I saw the hole in her house. The firemen told me she was taken to the hospital," Olsen said. "It was horrible."
Olsen said police officers told him of her death several hours later at the hospital. A few days later Olsen has wrapped up plans for Paleczny's memorial, slated for next week.
"It's been a tough few days. She was a lovely lady, stubborn as a mule, but she was wonderful."
Olsen said Paleczny didn't have any siblings or children. He knew she had some cousins, but she was not close with any of them.
"It wasn't because of any hard feelings," Olsen said. "She just didn't have close relatives."
Paleczny was born in St. Clements and lived in Waterloo Region her entire life. Olsen said she was divorced from a marriage decades ago.....
