    • George Battler.

      It becomes our sad duty to chronicle the death of one of our most highly respected pioneers of Wilmot in the person of Mr. George Battler, which occurred on April 20th. He had been ailing for years from rheumatism but it was only during the last four weeks that he was confined to his bed. A severe attack of dropsy set in which carried him off in a short time. He had reached the advanced age of 87 years 10 months and 27 days. The funeral took place April 23rd and was very largely attended,many coming from quite a distance to pay the last tribute of respect to the departed. The remains were taken to the Wilmot Centre church where services were held after which they were taken to the Pine Hill Cemetery for interment. The service were conducted by the Rev. Mr. Backus and Rev. Mr. Stauffer both of New Dundee.

      Deceased was born May 24th. 1820, in Yorkshire, England, emigrated to this country with his parents in the year 1830 and settled in Wilmot when it was but a wilderness. He was married in the year 1849 to Elizabeth Pickwell, the union being blessed with twelve children, five sons and seven daughters, of whom only three sons and two daughters survive, together with one sister and eight grand-children. William, the eldest son, resides in the Township of Hay; James, near New Dundee, and John near Wilmot Centre; Tamer, the wife of George Dean, resides near Roseville, and Bella, wife of Henry Struth, at home with her mother. We extend our heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved ones.
