  • Notes
    • Death of Mrs. John Hertel

One of Hanover's early residents passed away last Saturday evening at 6: 15 o'clock in the person of Mrs. John Hertel Sr. She had attained the ripe old age of 81 years 11 months and 22 days. Death was the result of heart trouble and dropsy with which she had suffered since June last and took place at the home of her son John with whom she had lived for some years. Deceased was born in Schwarzburg, Saxony, Germany , and was a daughter of Mr. John Wilhelm. Her maiden name was Zeta Wilhelm. She emigrated to Canada in 1846 and the same year married Mr. Hertel at Mitchell. After a short residence here they moved to Carrick township. Forty six years ago they came to Hanover, and so were among our early settlers. Mr. Hertel who was a mason by trade died 21 years ago. Their marriage was blessed with 11 children, 7 of whom survive, viz - Minnie (Mrs. John Hallman) of town, Louis, Deloraine, Man., Zelma (Mrs. Harry Lackner) of Mi(a)misburg, Ohio, Kate (Mrs. Richard Laird) of Vancouver, Chris also of Vancouver, Tena and John of Hanover. Deceased was a very fine old lady and her passing will occasion much sorry among her many friends. Our early settlers are fast passing away and soon all that will remain will be a memory fragrant with good and kind deeds. The funeral took place yesterday afternoon to the Hanover cemetery, a memorial service being held in the Baptist church by Rev. H. Marshner before the interment. Mr. and Mrs. Aug. Hertel of Berlin brought a beautiful spray. Among those from a distance at the funeral were: August and Herman Hertel of Berlin, Mrs. Dan Boettger, Mrs. Fred Wolfhardt, all of Berlin, Mrs. Lackner of Ohio, Harvey Bogues and Melville Bogues of Glengarry, Mich., and Listowel respectively, Mrs. Hardy of Deloraine, and Elden and Herb Hallman of Listowel.
