Notes |
- Death of Mr. Killer.
The many friends of Mr. Nicholas Killer will be pained to her of his death which occurred on Wednesday forenoon. He had been a great sufferer for some months and his death was not unexpected. In his death, Waterloo loses one of its oldest and most respected citizens The following brief sketch of his life will prove interesting to many of his former friends:
Mr. John Nicholas Killer was born at Bernsburg, Kreisalsfeld, in the Grand Duchy of Darmstadt, on the 27th November, 1823. When eighteen years of age immigrated to Canada and settled in Waterloo where he lived until his death. In his early years he was a builder and contractor in which he was successful in massing quite a large amont of property. He built the present Town Hall and also the Marble Block in which he carried on business for a number of years. 1875 the hardware firm of N. Killer & Son was formed and the business was carried on until about two years ago when it was disposed of to Mssrs. J. W. Fear & Co, the present proprietors.
Mr. Killer always took an active interest in municipal and school affairs and every measure which had for its object the promotion of the interests of the town found in him a warm friend. He has very closely identified with the progress of the town for more than fifty years He was one of the organizers of The Waterloo Mutual Fire Insurance Company and was one the directors from its formation up to the time of his death. He was a member of the village Council for some years and served in the Town Council for some years. He was a valued and active member of the Public School Board for, 26 consecutive years. He also took a lively interest in church work and was one of the pillars of St. John's Lutheran church of which he was a trustee for thirty six years and In which he also filled the office of treasurer.
He was of a quiet, peaceable and kindly disposition that always commanded the respect and friendship of everyone. He was married to Christina Schneider who survives him. His children are all grown up and most of them hold good positions in life. They are as follows: John, Inspector of the Waterloo Mutual Fire Insurance Co Jasper and George, residing in Winnipeg,; Peter in Chicago; Fred in Toronto; Catharine, wife of Mr. Gerhard Heintzman, piano manufacturer , Toronto; Elizabeth, wife of Mr. Geo. H. Hutchinson, barrister of this town; Largetta, unmarried, still at some. Three of his children predeceaced him, viz., Harry who died six years go this spring; Emma who died in 1879 aged 10 and Charles in 1873,
aged 2 years.
The funeral will take place from his residence, King street, on Saturday next, at 1 30 p. m. to St. John's Lutheran church for service, then to Mount Hope Cemetery for interment.
We are sure that the widow and family will have the sympathy of the entire community in the great bereavement that has befallen them.
