Notes |
- Mr. W. D. Ludwig is a native of Peel Township, where he was born on a farm near Wallenstein. He followed farming until a year ago, when he purchased the well established retail grain, seed and flour and feed business of Mr. Geo. Klinck, in Klinck's block, formerly Uttley's old stand. This business Mr. Ludwig is carrying on much on the same lines as it was formerly conducted. He keeps on hand a full stock of seeds and provides feeders with whole and chopped grain, and householders with flour, produce and groceries. He pays cash for butter and eggs and enjoys a good trade in this line.

Late William D. Ludwig Identified With Business Life Here for Quarter-Century
Suddenly Called by Death While Visiting Home of Aged Mother, Recovering from Stroke; born in Wallenstein in 1872; Many Mourners Pay Last Respects to Merchant
William Doerr Ludwig, prominent in the business life of Elmira for the past 25 years, died at the home of his mother on Thursday night following an illness of only two days. The late Mr. Ludwig had been staying with his mother who suffered a stroke a week ago, when he was taken ill. Death occurred suddenly and was due to a heart attack. Born near Wallenstein in 1872, a son of the late John Ludwig and Mrs. Ludwig, his early years were spent on the farm, which he later purchased from his father. About 25 years ago he moved to Elmira and bought a feed store from George Klinck. He later operated a grocery store for a short time before opening the book and stationery store on Arthur street. He is survived by his bereaved widow (formerly Laura Weichel) and two children, John and Jean, his aged mother and three sisters; Caroline, (Mrs. August Dammeier) of Linwood; Mary, at home, and Louise, (Mrs. Menno Musselman) of Kitchener. One sister, Matilda, died some years ago. The funeral, which took place on Sunday afternoon, was one of the largest held in Elmira for some time. Services were conducted by Rev. L. Kalbfleisch in St. James's Lutheran Church, of which the deceased man was a member. Interment took place in St. James's cemetery, the pallbearers being Harvey Haeck, Louis FFischer, Oscar Wahl, Russel Ruppel, John Klinck and William Rahn.
