    • Matis Edmund

Passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 16, 2014 at Grand River Hospital at the age of 94.

Beloved husband of the late Elsa Matis (2002).
Devoted father of Bernhard Matis, of Kitchener and Herbert Matis (Marilyn), of Caledon East. Cherished Opa of Janessa, Kristoffer, Alicia, and Stefani.

Edmund was born in Bieniew, Poland to the late Jakob and Justine (Schmidt) Matis. His carefree early years there ended with the beginning of the war and the resulting turmoil experienced by so many of his generation. These experiences, from narrowly surviving a roundup of German males in the first days of the war, followed by the war years themselves and the postwar years as a POW in Siberia helped to shape him. He was sustained in difficult times by his Christian faith and his determination to never lose hope. Following his release he married Elsa and then emigrated first to Argentina in 1948, and to Canada in 1955, settling in Kitchener. Edmund was a devoted father who provided for his family by working for a number of employers over the years, but the job he enjoyed the most was working as a custodian at the Waterloo Public Library. He regularly attended services at both Kitchener Mennonite Brethren and Central Baptist churches. In his later years he was able to remain active and remain in his own home.

Edmund's family will receive relatives and friends from 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 21, 2014 at the Henry Walser Funeral Home, 507 Frederick Street, Kitchener, 519-749-8467. Funeral Service will be held in the chapel of the funeral home on Monday, December 22, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. Reception to follow. Interment at Parkview Cemetery.

As expressions of sympathy, donations to the Kitchener Mennonite Brethren Church, Central Baptist Church or the Grand River Regional Cancer Centre would be appreciated by the family (cards available at the funeral home).
