- Cancer fells firefighter who publicized job's dangers Former firefighter:
Former Kitchener firefighter Bill Duncan, who for two years battled brain cancer attributed to his job, died Friday. For years, Bill Duncan fought for compensation for his fellow Kitchener firefighters stricken with cancer after years of battling fires. On Friday, Duncan died of brain cancer, the result of fighting hundreds of fires in his 33-year career. He was 56. "He didn't regret what he did but he hoped that his illness would raise awareness" among firefighters about the hazards of the job, said Steve Jones, president of the Kitchener firefighters association. As former president of the association, Duncan fought for years for compensation for the 10 Kitchener firefighters who have died from occupational cancer since 1988. Seven of the 10 firefighters fought a 1987 fire at Horticultural Technologies, a plant where more than 200 chemicals were stored. Duncan did not fight that fire.
