      D . McDougall,
      Registrar &c.,
      Berlin.

      Dear. sir:-

I am reluctantly forced to ask one last favor you;- I am and have been for some time back serious financial trouble, and to extricate myself I require to raise four hundred dollars. Now, I am going to ask you to assist me in getting this for unless I have it inside of a couple of days I shall lose all I have in the world. I do not ask you to give me the money, but to let me have your note or your endorsement for the amount. I can secure you with property of one kind or another worth over double what I ask and am willing to assign everything, I have to you as security. I have tried hard for the past 3 or 4 weeks to arrange this without troubling you, but the time come when further delay means simple financial ruin to me. You may be sure that nothing. but extreme necessity compels me to ask this - Please do not fail me. I ask it of your friendship, and you may be sure I shall leave nothing undone to show my gratitude.

      Yours truly,

      J. E. Stanton

In 1851, Heinrich Eby sold Canadier to his brother, Peter Eby, who sold it to another brother, Elias Eby in July of 1856. In May of 1857, Elias Eby sold Canadier to Dougall McDougall, who owned the paper until the Berliner Journal, a competing German newspaper, forced him to cease publication in 1865. Previously in Belleville, he had been part owner and editor of the Hastings Chronicle, afterwards in Chatham he was manager of the Kent Advertizer.

He was accused of pocketing registrations fees as part of his role as Registrar of the County of Waterloo.
