KW Tailor for 63 years dies at 86 Herman E. Ahrens of 43 Van Camp Ave., a tailor for 63 years, died Thursday at St. Mary's Hospital. Mr. Ahrens, one of 12 children of the late Mr. and Mrs. Charles Ahrens, began as a tailor's apprentice when he was 13. Born Nov. 23, 1871, he moved to the United States in 1897. Two years later he married Alvina Hofert at Mount Pleasant, Mich. He returned to Kitchener, then Berlin, in 1904 and opened a tailor shop on King Street. He also operated a tailor shop in Fergus for several years. The same year he returned he accepted a post as deputy returning officer for municipal elections. He retired 10 years ago. He was a member of the Swedenborgian Church of the Good Shepherd. He was also active in the local Moose lodge. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Herbert and Leonard of Kitchener; four daughters, Mrs. Alexander (Marguerite) Schell and Mrs. Helen Luft of Kitchener, Mrs. Perlous (Grace) Lasso of Bridgeport, Mrs. Norris (Ruth) Lembke of Toronto; 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. One son Eugene died in 1912. The body is at the Schreiter Sandrock Funeral Home until Monday at 1 p.m. when it will be taken to the Church of the Good Shepherd for funeral at 2: 30 p.m. Ralph Kirchew will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery.
