  • Notes
    • Canada ordered Herbert Fahrenkopf, 26, into the army in January 1918, conscripting him off a Saskatchewan farm. The unmarried farmer was born in St. Clements.

On his way to the Amiens front, Fahrenkopf marched through a French village lined with U.S. troops who cheered themselves hoarse. The Canadians cheered back.

Days later a German shell killed him in what was likely his first combat. He survived less than three weeks on the Western Front.
