Notes |
- JOHN BOEGEL
This gentleman has been longer and more closely identified with the business interests of St. Clements than any other citizen here at the present time, and is undoubtedly more extensively engaged in that which affords commercial life for the village. He was born within a half mile of St. Clements and first knew the nature of hard work on the farm. Ha has travelled considerably and has seen a good deal of the world outside of his native land, having been over quite a portion of the United States, through which any man is apt to acquire a thorough knowledge of human nature and business principles.
He is quite extensively engaged in the lumber business, having a large saw mill and lumber yard. The mill has a capacity for turning out from ten to fifteen thousand feet of lumber per day. But as this is not kept constantly in operation to supply the requirements owing to the limited supply of logs in this section, he imports a great deal of lumber needed to fulfill contracts with his patrons. This season he brought in something like seventeen car-loads in addition to the many thousands of feet his mill turned out for his yards and in the way of custom work. He is always prepared to supply builders and contractors, quite number of whom are sometimes a considerable distance from St. Clements, frequently having, orders from Waterloo and Berlin. He has been engaged in the lumber business here about six years.
Prior to engaging in his present business Mr. Boegel conducted a hotel, wagon shop and butcher shop. He was landlord of the Royal Hotel for about eleven years; but while he proved to be a popular and successful hotelman his inclination was toward a business which was more in accord with his nature, energy and activity. In fact there is not a man in the neighborhood who appears to be as actively engaged in business. He is also fortunate in having plenty of assistance in his own family, having nine sons to his credit, one, however, being deceased. This is a distinction of which few fathers can boast, and were all males subject to military duty in this country the same as they are in Germany, Mr. Boegel would be a true patriot, indeed. He is a staunch supporter of Reform principles and the Reform party. He resides near the village and has a farm of sixty acres.
