He was born in Cleba, District of Hersfeld, Jurisdiction of Niederaula, in the former principality of Hesse, learned the brick-layer's trade at the age of 16 years, and entered the body-guard of the principality of Kassel, where he served for 3 years. Hardel from Sparsee, Pomerania, and together, they produced 3 sons and 6 daughters, of which 3 sons and 2 daughters are still living, namely Caspar, Minnie and Mary in Berlin and Andrew and Edward in Cincinnati.
He was a hard working, diligent, obliging man; he had many friends and enjoyed the respect and trust of his fellow citizens to a high degree; he represented them for 6 years on the municipal council. As a master builder, he executed many contracts and many a building in Berlin and area is his work. For the last 9 years, he did not undertake any more contracts and worked instead with his son.
