On Saturday, October 6, 1979 at the Portage General Hospital, Mr. David L. Cairns, beloved husband of Mrs. Louise Cairns of 309-701 Crescent Road East, Portage la Prairie.
Funeral service conducted by the Reverend Colin Chapman will be held on Wednesday, October 10 at 2 p.m. in St. Mary's Anglican Church. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Cairns was born on March 12, 1919 at Holmefield, Man. son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Cairns. He received his education at Holmefield and Killarney where he joined the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce at the age of 19. He served with the Canadian Army in the R.C.E.M.E. from 1940 to 1946 after which he rejoined the bank. During his forty years of service with the bank Mr. Cairns was branch manager first at Holland, Man. and then Rainey River, Ont. before becoming bank inspector at Winnipeg. After six years in that position he moved to Flin Flon as manager and since September of 1970 was manager of the branch in Portage la Prairie. He retired in February of this year. Mr. Cairns was also well known in the community life of this city. He was a former treasurer of the Portage Rotary Club, was active in the Central Plains United Way and the Red Shield Campaigns, and was a member of the Portage Progressive Conservative Association. He was a member of St. Mary's la Prairie Anglican Church and had served as treasure for a time.
Besides his loving wife, the former (Hulda) Louise Miller of Preston, Ont. who he married in 1946, he is survived by two sons, Richard and his wife Elaine of Calgary, Alta. and Jeffrey of Nelson, B.C., granddaughter Elizabeth, three sisters, Mrs. Wm. Stringer (Nora) of Winnipeg, Mrs. J. Hodgins (Dorothy) and Mrs. G. Chapman (Corinne) both of Killarney and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his mother in 1942, his father in 1943 and two brothers Charles and John.
