- Mildred Wagner, the first female MD in Twin Cities
Mildred Wagner, who was the first female doctor in Kitchener-Waterloo, died Thursday at Freeport Hospital Health Care Village in Kitchener. She was 88.
After graduating from the University of Western Ontario and interning at Victoria Hospital in London, Ont., and receiving her medical licence in 1933, Wagner came to the Twin Cities as a general practitioner. In 1942, she received her obstetrical certification.
She was one of three obstetricians in K-W, working with Dr. Donald Ewing and Dr. Willard Sehl, who established the obstetrical department at St. Mary's Hospital.
"Mildred was liked by everyone," said Sehl, who was medical director for Dominion Life when he retired.
Dr. Irene Hain, who retired recently after 30 years as a Twin City obstetrician, remembered Wagner as a "very caring person whose patients adored her."
She also recalled that Wagner was a "lady dressed." always immaculately Hain said she believes that Wagner was still seeing patients up to five years ago at her Maynard Avenue home in Kitchener.
"Our times overlapped and she was very good to me when I came to Kitchener," Hain said.
For many years, Wagner practised from an office she built on Weber Street, near Queen Street, behind the old YMCA. Wagner was the last surviving member of her family having been predeceased by her parents, and two brothers, Franklin, and Dr. Leroy Wagner who was an Elmira doctor.
The funeral and committal services will be conducted at the Ratz- Bechtel Funeral Home chapel in Kitchener on Monday at 2:30 p.m.
