William H. Hamblin, 81, one of Canada's most prominent candy manufacturers, died last night at the K-W Hospital. He resided at 157 Stirling Ave. North.
Founder of Smiles 'n Chuckles, Ltd., in 1917, Mr. Hamblin had been president of the company since that time. He established the industry from the Metcalfe Candy business which he purchased in 1917 when he first moved to Kitchener. He was past-president of the Confectioners Association of Canada.
BORN IN ENGLAND
Born in Yeovil, Somerset, England, Dec. 2, 1871, Mr. Hamblin started out as a glove maker and later served as a grocer's apprentice and a colliery salesman. He was also a representative for Lever Bros. for some years in England.
Upon moving to Canada in 1907 Mr. Hamblin settled in Winnipeg where he opened a manufacturers agency. In 1916 he left the west and moved to Toronto, coming to Kitchener the following year. During the years he operated Smiles 'n Chuckles, Mr. Hamblin maintained a close personal relationship always with all members of his staff.
Active in Twin City organizations he was a charter member as well as past-president of the K-W Rotary Club; a member of the Kitchener Chamber of Commerce and Twin City AF and AM. He was a member of Trinity United Church.
SURVIVED BY SON
He was the son of the late Henry Hamblin and Louis Farrant. His wife, the former Clara H. Constance, died Sept. 29, 1950. Surviving is one son, Gordon, Kitchener, one grandson, Robert; one grand-daughter, Mrs. John F. (Helen Joan) Ledger, Kitchener, and four great-grandchildren.
The body will rest at the Schreiter Sandrock Funeral Home until 1:30 p.m. Saturday when removal will be made to Trinity United Church for service at 3 p.m. Interment will be in Woodland Cemetery. Rev. O. P. Hossie will officiate. Friends are asked to pay their respects prior to the time of the service.
