  • Notes
    • MCGANITY, ARTHUR JAMES was born on November 18, 1887, in Grenville County, a son of Thomas and Mary McGanity. He was educated at the local schools, and at Brockville High School. He was then employed by the International Harvester Company for six years, as bookkeeper and time keeper. After this he entered the School of Medicine of the University of Toronto, graduating in 1915.

Immediately following graduation he enlisted in the army, going overseas as Medical Officer of the 84th. Battalion, and to France in the same capacity for the 4th. Divisional Train. He was then assigned to 13th. Field Ambulance, and then to the 47th. Battalion. He was invalided back to Britain, and attached to Shorncliffe. After the Armistice he was at Headquarters at London, Ont. and received his discharge in September, 1919.

Between the wars he was Medical Officer of the Scots Fusiliers from 1929 to 1935, and Officer Commanding the Reserve 24th. Field Ambulance from 1935 to 1948.

He spent some time at St. Michael's Hospital after his discharge, and in 1920 began to practice in Kitchener from his residence at the corner of Duke and College Streets.

In 1929 he joined the Dominion Life Insurance Company of Waterloo, at first as part time, and from 1934as full time as Medical Director. He continued to do a certain amount of general practice as well. During this time with the Insurance Company he served a term as President of the Canadian Medical Directors Association. In 1934-5 he was President of the Ontario Medical Association. He was a member of professional and other organizations, including Kiwanis, where he served a term as President. .

He retired from the Dominion Life in 1957 and then moved to Jamaica where he continued with insurance work until he retired, to move to San Antonio, Texas.

He continued to have a keen interest in medical affairs until he left for the South, and usually attended local medical meetings.

He could always be counted upon to join in discussions, generally at some length, consistent with his extensive experience.

On September 3, 1973 He died in Texas, and was survived by his widow, one son, Dr. Wm. McGanity of Galveston, Texas, and two daughters, including Dr. Mary Elizabeth Parkin of Toronto.
