Notes |
- Another building of note in the picture is the two-storey, ivy-covered structure at 99 King St. S., between Snyder's and the Texaco station.
In 1960 the storefront here was home to Hearth Radio. Owner Eugene Hearth sold radios, televisions and other electrical appliances here for only about a year, but he was in business elsewhere in downtown Waterloo for more than four decades, starting in 1936.
In 1982, four years before his death, Hearth was interviewed by The Record and described how in 1949 he had purchased the first TV in Waterloo - it had a seven-inch screen \emdash and used a friend's antenna to pick up images from a Buffalo television station.
"There were about a dozen people there," Hearth said. "We all wondered what we would see. We hooked it up and got a picture. It wasn't 100 per cent, but it showed what television could do."
