    • CELEBRATION OF HOMAGE AND SUPPORT

In accordance with the announcement, approximately 25 members of the German military unit made their way at 4 o'clock on Saturday afternoon to Victoria Park, some on foot and some in carriages, with the town band at the head, and a German flag carried ahead, and laid 3 wreaths of maple leaves at the Kaiser's monument. One with the inscription on a black, white and red ribbon, "Dedicated to His Majesty Emperor Wilhelm I, from the German veterans, September 4, 1897"; one for Prince Bismarck with the inscription: "Dedicated to the founder of the German empire, Sept. 4, 1897", and one for Field Marshall Moltke, with the inscription, "To the glorious leader of the German army, Sept.4, 1897". Musicians and veterans wore black-white and red sashes. The laying of the wreaths was performed by Messrs. Henry Braun, Charles Wernecke, and Henry Waldmann.

The music played, accompanied by the singing of the veterans, "The Watch on the Rhine", and "Deutschland ueber alles" and short speeches were made by Captain Charles Mueller and Senator Samuel Merner. There were 3 cheers for Queen Victoria, but not for the German Emperor, which would have been fitting on this occasion. Perhaps they forgot.

In the evening there was a dance held in the skating-rink for the benefit of the Gustav Salomon family, whose home in the west ward recently burned down.
