  • Notes
    • CLARKE, , and his associate Hall first came to local attention through notices advising of impending visits, notices with testimonials mainly from Eclectics. His intention of remaining in Galt is found in a card in the Dumfries Reformer dated July 29, 1863:

DR. CLARKE, ECLECTIC PHYSICIAN, LICENTIATE OF CANADA, Formerly of New York and Philadelphia Hospitals, gives special attention to diseases of the EYE & EAR, in most cases giving relief in thirty minutes; also OLD CHRONIC DISEASES of every type and form are treated.

He will examine and describe the symptoms and diseases without asking any questions. This is accomplished through Sherwood's celebrated system of Diagnosis, which never fails to develop the true and exact condition of every internal organ. The Doctor will in future RESIDE IN GALT, when he can be consulted at ANDERSON'S HOTEL, commencing on WEDNESDAY next, August. He will visit GUELPH, on Mondays of each week, AYR on Wednesdays of each week, and PARIS on Fridays of each week, remaining the balance of the time at his office in Galt.

The paper welcomed him with:"The Doctor has, in connection with Dr. Hall, visited nearly all sections of Western Canada and has won no little celebrity by the number of cures he has effected. He brings from St. Mary's where he has resided for some time, several flattering testimonials as to his Professional skill and personal character.

Quite a number of people here have been already relieved by his treatment throughout this County, and on taking up his residence amongst us, we wish him success.

He was probably George A. Clark of Ingersoll. a 1861 graduate of Buchanan's bogus diploma millm the Eclectic Medical College of Pennsylvania, or he may have been John Clark of Portland, a 1853 graduate. His name does not appear in the Waterloo County Directory for 1864, and no further mention of him has been found.
