  COUTTS, EDGAR NESBITT was born in Kent County in 1874, He received his preliminary education at Chatham Collegiate, and then entered the University of Toronto, graduating in medicine in 1900. He interned at the Royal Infirmary, Glasgow. His subsequent career was followed by the University of Toronto Monthlyi June 1901 - E. N. Coutts, M. B.. '00 who has held the George Brown Memorial Scholarship in the University of Toronto Medical Faculty since graduating has obtained the Colonial Fellowship in Pathology in connection with University College Liverpool, England. May 1903 - E. N. Coutts M. B. '00 is surgeon in charge of the raining camp at Obnassi, Joramasi, Gold Coast, West Africa. Daily Telegraph Nov. 14, 1906 - Dr. E. Coutts who has been practising in the mining camps in South Africa for nearly a year, visited at the home of Jonas Bingeman. U of T. Monthly Jan. 1908 - Dr. E. N. Coutts . 00 of Agincourt appointed Associate Coroner of County of York. June 1917 - E. N. Coutts M. B. '00 held a commission in the RAMC and was with a stationary hospital at Lemnos till he was invalided. Jan. 1922 - Edgar Nesbit Coutts, for fifteen years a leading physician of Scarboro., is leaving his former home in Agincourt to take up his new duties as the Superintendent of the Freeport Sanatorium at Preston. He contracted tuberculosis while serving in the Eastern Mediterranean area, and on being invalided out of the service, took his cure in England and Switzerland, and made a study of the disease The last entry from the University of Toronto Monthly is really reporting an accomplished fact. Dr. A. D. Proctor who had been Superintendent left Freeport on November 15, 1921. Dr. Coutts built up the Sanitorium to its later status, emphasizing as well the preventative aspects of tuberculosis control. His basic work was consolidated and expanded by Dr. Hawkins, who followed him. Together they contributed their share to the eradication of the disease, He took an active interest in the landscaping and reforestation of the grounds of the Sanitorium. He retired in 1943 and moved to Toronto. He died on February 18, 1952, when he was 77 years of age. He was predeceased by his wife, and survived by two daughters. The 31st. Annual Report of the Waterloo Historical Society in 1944 has a history of Freeport written by Dr. Coutts. He concluded on a note of optimism concerning the control of tuberculosis: The modern achievement in the field of tuberculosis has been an evolution, based mainly on two discoveries, the tubercle bacillus and the X-ray. The knowledge multiplies. The effort surges forward. What is possible to-day was not possible 15 years ago. The next generation will see achievement not possible to-day.
