  • Notes
    • GHENT, BYRON ERASTUS. There is little local mention of this man.

He was a graduate of Victoria University, 1857 at which time his residence was given as Hamilton. He received his licence to practice in that year, according to the Canada Gazette of November 14, 1857.

In 1859-60 he was in the Morriston-Puslinch area, and in 1864 he was in Elmira. By 1867 he was in Priceville, and twenty years later, in Toronto, where the Ontario Medical Register lists him until 1892.

      _______________

      Left Priceville

Dr. Ghent, so long a familiar "landmark" in our western sister village, Priceville - recently sold his practice to Dr Hixon, a rising and popular young physician. Dr. Ghent has also succeeded in disposing of his property in and around Priceville at a good round sum, and has purchased a handsome residence on Queen Street west, Toronto for which he paid the sum of $8,000. We wish the Doctor every success in the Queen City. We were informed several weeks ago of the facts given above, but fearing it had no foundation, as in the case of the report circulated some time ago, we determined to say nothing until we had seen the Dr. in person.

      Dr Byron Erastus Ghent

A Helena special under date of Sept., 3, to the Anaconda Standard has the following: Among the passengers on the west-bound train which left this city at 2 o'clock this afternoon, was a man apparently toward 50 years of age who. in company with his wife, was making a trip to Kalispel to visit a son who resides there. The husband occupied the sent at the forward end of the day coach. The seat was reversed so that he was in full view of the passengers. His wife sat opposite, facing him. Just as it was time for the train to start the man uttered a groan, threw up his hands and seemed to be in a convulsion. Before the startled passengers nearest to him had time to hasten to his assistance he fell backwards and was dead. His distracted wife inmediately received the kind attention of several ladies who happened to be at the station. The body was removed to a stretcher and properly cared for. The stricken wife told those about her to telegraph to her son, Dr. Ghent, at Kalipel. She and her husband had made the journey from Canada. The husband had not complained of illness during the trip and the passengers from the east spoke of him as being in excellent spirits. A physician in attendance announced that death was the result of heart failure.
