Notes |
- GlESEA, FREDERICK AUGUSTUS was registered in 1869, and probably started in Snithville before coming to Berlin.
His card appeared in the Berliner Journal, May 5. 1870:
F. A. Giesea M. D.
German Doctor, Surgeon, Accoucheur. Office near H. Lakes Hardware Shop King Street. Residence by Pastor Sagehorn Frederick St. Berlin.
Dr. Giesea, graduated from the Eclectic University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, is licensed for Canada and has practised in large hospitals, also in city and country.
He invites the public to see him in all cases of sickness.
On May 12 a notice appeared in the Berliner Journal following the death of a child:
At the request of the father of the child we make this certification regarding this death, that the child did not die of measles, rather was sick of a laryngitis, which Djr. Giesea fairly well restored to health. Last Sunday a chill appeared, with a relapse from which despite all remedies employed death ensued.
Mention was made on May 26 of an operation by Drs. Giesea and Reilly performed under chloroform. A letter from Giesea and his consultants is found in the Berliner Journal of June 2nd.
To the editor of the Berliner Journal worthy Sir:
Mr. John Ahrens of Berlin, who has suffered for a long time from a disorder of the bowels, came recently under the care of Dr. Giesea. The Doctor found a large growth in the left side of the abdomen, which ultimately would lead to his death, and that probably soon. Dr. Reilly of Waterloo was called in in consultation, and he agreed with Dr. Giesea's diagnosis. An operation was required on the side of Mr. Ahrens and his friend (a delicate reference to the growth), to relieve his suffering and if possible prolong his life. Although both the above named physicians stated that such an operation in all probability could have a fatal termination, he insisted that an attempt be undertaken. Dr. Worthington of Wroxeter was called in consultation and assisted in the operation, however after the operation behan, and eventually following a painstaking examination, it was discovered that there was an aneurysmal mass in communication with the tumor, and it was most certain that such an operation must turn out to be fatal. On this account it was discontinued.
Signed:
F. A. Gieses M. D.
C. W. Reilly M.D.
U. Worthington M. D.
Berlin May 25, 1870.
(Mr. Ahrens died on September 15. )
This was the last mention of him until 1879 when his name appeared on a blacklist for owing the newspaper . $6. 00. By 1878 he was practising in Stockton, California.

DR. GIESEA DEAD
The Well-Known Physician Expires of Heart Disease
He Breathed His Last at an Early Hour This Morning -- Something About His Life.
Dr. F. A. Giesea died at his home at the corner of San Joaquin and Poplar streets at 23 minutes of 5 o'clock this morning.
The cause of Dr. Giesea's death was heart trouble. He had been afflicted with degeneration of that organ for several years, and it had weakened steadily during the last six months.
The doctor had a large practice, and the constant work and worry that fell on him added to his disorder. Last August he became so weak that he could no longer attend to the duties of his profession, and he took to his bed. The physician had been a dying man ever since then. He rallied temporarily two or three times, and was taken away once for a change of air, but was not greatly benefited.
For the last five days the doctor had been in a semi-unconscious state, but seemed to recognize those about him. He would regain his voice occasionally and talk with Dr. Beede, who was with him almost constantly, and with his wife and child. He realized that he could not live, and talked calmly of his approaching demise.
The doctor rallied last night for a short time and bade his family and Dr. Beede good bye. He sank rapidly from that time until death came to relieve him.
Dr. Giesea was born in Berlin April 26, 1847, and was consequently about forty-six years old when he died. His parents removed to Canada when he was four years of age. As soon as he was old enough he entered the College of Physicians and Surgeons in Montreal, from which he graduated in 1869 at the age of 22 years. He practiced in Hamilton, Canada, for a time, and then removed to Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, where he practiced several years.
The doctor came to California in 1876 and located at Walnut Grove. He went from there to Bakersfield and finally located in Stockton in May, 1884, forming a partnership with Dr. Beede, who had studied under him before going to college. The firm did a remarkable business, and Dr. Beede was prostrated from overwork about the same time that Dr. Giesea was.
The deceased leaves a wife and one son. His father, who was a preacher, is dead, but his mother still lives in Fond du Lac, at the age of 80 years. He has a brother there also. The old lady is said to be on her death-bed.
The estate left by the deceased is worth from $60,000 to $70,000. It consists of the house and lot where he lived, the Central livery stable, a half interest in the Brooklyn lodging-house, lots on Main street near the railroad, and smaller pieces of property; also life insurance to the amount of $10,000.
It is supposed that the house and lot and an annuity are willed to Mrs. Giesea and that the bulk of the property is willed to her in trust for the boy when he shall come of age.
In expectation of Dr. Giesea's death he and Dr. Beede had settled up their partnership affairs.
The funeral will take place at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon from the family residence.

DR. GIESEA BURIED.
The Funeral Service Over the Dead Physician This Afternoon.
The funeral of Dr. Giesea took place from the family residence at the corner of San Joaquin and Poplar streets at 2 o'clock this afternoon. It was the wish of the family that all the arrangements for the burial should be as simple as good taste would permit. The doctor had been a member of the Unitarian Society, and the pastor of that flock, the Rev. Mr. Copeland, officiated at the last rites. There was no music.
The services were attended by the friends of the family, and delegations from the Ancient Order of Foresters and Knights of the Golden Eagle, of which organizations the deceased was a member. The interment was at Rural cemetery.
