  • Notes
    • HAZELIUS, ADOLPH DANIEL. The News Record of June 12, 1909, remarking on items from the Canada museum of November 3, 1836 to December to, 1837, provides an introduction to this man:

Dr. A. Hazelius from Germany offers his services as a doctor. He studied in the University of Jena and was for many years military surgeon in the Allied Army. His medical preparations belong mostly to the plant kingdom. His system of cure is similar to that of Dr . Dellenbaugh of Buffalo, N. Y. Dr. Hazelius resides opposite to O'Loaners school house about two miles east of Berlin in Waterloo township. (Centreville)•

The date of his arrival is assumed to be some time in 1836.

His card in the Canada Museum, June 8, 1839. says that he is again in Waterloo, implying that he had been out of the county. He also announces that he is associated with Dr. J. Scott.

On August 3rd. the Canada Museum notes: Drs. Scott and Hazelius have their office and pharmacy, between Baumans Inn and Millars Store, at the sign of the yellow mortar.

Their card of October 5, 1839 has a list of some of their patent remedies, including Hazelius' Hysteric Drops and his Antibilious Pills. It also announces that they have an excellent Galvanic Battery for treating various diseases.

The association was ended the next year - Dr. Scott inserted a notice on April 4, 1840.. . Dr. Hazelius will leave Waterloo on the 1st. of May next" together with instructions regarding collection of accounts.

He moved to Preston, and when he left there, his notice in Der Deutsche Canadier of January 12, 1844 informed the public that he would be at the store of Mr. Henry Liersche, where he would practice as Physician and Apothecary."All accounts for medicines dispensed by me from December 25th. On, must be duly honored solely to Mr. Liersch, or if desired, any type of grain product, or wholly medicinal herbs may be taken in addition as settlement."

Speculation about his financial arrangements in Wilmot may be resolved in some measure by his final notice in the issue of November 6, 1845.

      DR. A. D . HAZELIUS

Begs leave to inform his friends and the public generally that he has left his place at Mr. Henry Liersch's and that he has now established himself in the village of Petersburg at Mr. Joseph H. Unsicker's where he will be ready in the course of one week, to administer Counsel and Medicine unto all those that will please to call upon him. He also begs to state, that he has set up on his own account, but his former services at Mr. Liersch's must be paid unto that individual.

His frequent moves - five in less than nine years- may be an indication that he was not highly regarded as a physician. His association of less than a year with Dr. Scott may confirm this, considering the latter's outspoken dislike of medical incompetence.
