__________
J. B. Lash, secretary to the Indian commissioner in Winnipeg, died very suddenly from heart failure last night at his home, 55 Hargrave street. Mr. Lash came from Ontario, but had been living in the west for many years. He was engaged in business on the Saskatchewan river. During the North-west rebellion he was taken prisoner by Riel and Dumont and confined in the cellar of a house in Batoche. When the Canadian troops captured Batoche he was released. Shortly after this Mr. Lash entered the service of the Indian department and was for a number of years agent at Miscowpetung's agency on the Qu'Appelle river. On account of his valuable services he was promoted to the head office in Winnipeg, where he was occupied for the last eight years. Mr. Lash was 55 years old. He leaves a wife and two daughters. The body will be sent east tomorrow night for burial in the family plot in St. James cemetery, Toronto.
