Notes |
- RICE, LEONARD EBEN was born in 1865 near Embro. He graduated from Trinity University Medical School in 1890. There is little information about his movements but the first mention of him was in the Stratford herald, as reported by the Weekly Reformer of December 27, 1894. This item said that he had been presented with a gold-headed cane on the occasion of his leaving for his home near Embro. Since he was listed in Atwood in an 1892 directory, he was probably preparing to leave that area for New Dundee. It would seem therefore that his arrival there was early in 1895.
After ten years he moved on, and a great gathering of the villagers testified to the esteem in which he was held. The Daily Telegraph carried a detailed account of this party, all in superlatives. Before a crowd of three hundred he was presented with an eight day clock, and his mother received a china berry set. There were speeches, music, songs and readings. At the banquet" the menu, decorations of the table, etc. were simply perfect, " "The appetizing viands literally tickled the palate to perfection." The arrangement committee read a flattering address on behalf of the citizens.
On leaving New Dundee he took postgraduate work and settled in Toronto, he practised there until 1918, and died on August 13, 1951 at the age of 86. He was survived by his widow,
