Notes |
- Death of City Clerk Harvey, of Guelph.
Guelph Mercury.
John Harvey, city clerk and treasurer, died Sunday evening. Mr. Harvey was born in Truro, Cornwall, England, on June 19, 1813, and if he had lived four days longer would consequently have been 72 years of age. He emigrated with some of his brothers and other friends to America at the age of 18, or about the year 1831. Those who accompanied him settled in Niagara, and after a few years' sojourn in Le Roy, N. Y., Rochester and Detroit, he finally removed to Niagara also in 1835. There he carried on a tanning business for some time, and during his stay was married to Miss Hearle, who survives him. In the troubleous times of 1837 he served as a volunteer under Senator Dickson going through the whole campaign. He could relate many incidents of the rebellion, not the least interesting of which was the burning of the Caroline, of which he was an eye-witness. About 1843 he moved to Galt, where in partnership with John Hearle he carried on a tanning and grocery business, Mr. Harvey having charge of the tannery and Mr. Hearle of the grocery. On leaving there in 1846 Mr. Harvey removed to Hamilton and started another tannery with George L. Beardmore. This establishment was burned down after some years, and then Mr. Harvey engaged in a tanning business in Caledonia, although he still continued. to reside in Hamilton. In 1852 Mr. Beardmore built a tannery on Cardigan street in this city, near the Eramosa bridge and Mr. Harvey came to Guelph to manage it for him. Here he has since continued to reside, a period of thirty-two years. During this time no man has been better known to the people of Guelph and vicinity. In 1854 two years after his arrival in Guelph he was elected a councillor for the North ward, and ever since he has been continuously associated in one way or another with our civic affairs. He sat at the council board from that time as councillor, reeve, or deputy-reeve until 1860 when he was elected mayor, being the second chief magistrate ever elected by, the people of Guelph.
