Notes |
- SOVEREIGN, JEREMIAH W. was a cousin of David Sovereign Bowlby. He was listed in Paris in 1843 in Scobie's Canada Almanac. The Canada Gazette of February 24 1852 records the granting of his licence for Upper Canada. His medical education was obtained at the Rolph School, as well as in the United States.
How long he practised in Paris is unknown, but his arrival in Berlin was marked by the appearance of his card in the Berlin Telegraph on June 3, 1853.
J. W. Sovereign M. D. Licentiate of the Medical Board for Canada West and graduate of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of the University of the State of New York, has permanently established himself at Berlin. Office at the Royal Exchange Hotel (N. Ziegler) where he may be consulted at all hours.
The Telegraph said "He comes to our town highly recommended as a man and as a Physician."
Just over a year later, on September 21, 1854, he died. His obituary is in the Deutsche Canadier of that date.
The Good and Noble die young.
Dr. J. W. Sovereign
died this morning after a long illness. He died the victim of his love for mankind. Ceaselessly day and night he was the friendly physician at the bedside of the sick, giving help and bestowing confidence until he paid for the strain, and a high fever sent him to his bed.
Dr. Sovereign, if I am not mistaken, of English descent, was one of those noble, enlightened, selfsacrificing men, untiring in practising their philanthropic obligation, indeed not a regular church goer, but a high minded man. Conscientious in practising his profession, sociable and entertaining with a group of friends, he achieved in a very short time in his sojourn here an extended practice, with the regard and esteem of all sincere minded.
He died in the best years of his manhood, and the many who have him to thank for their health, will never forget their friend and physician.
May his ashes rest in peace.
