- SPOHN, PHILIP DOUGLAS was born in Penetanguishene on December 11, 1887, one of the sons of Dr. Philip H. and Edith (Thompson) Spohn. He married Maude Potvin, B. A. in 1910, and they had three daughters and a son, Dr. James D. Spohn. He died in Waterloo on April 19, 1977 aged 91.
He was educated at St. Andrews College and the University of Toronto where he received his medical degree in 1910. He served a short internship at the Hamilton General hospital, but was called to Corpus Christi, Texas to rake over the practice of an uncle. He was also appointed assistant surgeon to the St. Louis, Brownsville and Mexico Railway.
After six years in Texas he joined the Royal Array Medical Corps in 1916, serving in England, and returning in 1919 with the rank of Captain.
Following his discharge he returned to Texas where in September 1919 a hurricane destroyed his house and belongings.
He then went to Toronto where he was a demonstrater at the University in the Department of Anatomy, he also acted as part time anaesthetist at the outdoor department of the Hospital for Sick Children.
In 1923 he came to Kitchener as was noted by the Daily Record on June 5th:
Dr. and Mrs. D. Spohn and family of Toronto have taken up their residence at 17 West Weber St.
The following year he was appointed Medical Officer of Health and he served about two years on a part time basis.
He spent twenty years as assistant Medical Referee of the Dominion Life Assurance Company, and continued to do part time practice as well. He served in the Reserve R. C. A. M. C. until 1945. He continued to practice until shortly before his death.

K-W doctor P. D. Spohn dies at 91
Dr. Philip Douglas Spohn, 91, a practising physician in Kitchener- Waterloo for 55 years, died at K-W Hospital today.
Dr. Spohn, who was a former medical officer of health for Waterloo, had suffered a stroke recently. Originally from Penetanguishene, he served overseas in the medical corps during the First World War and was involved in recruiting during the Second World War. Before moving to Kitchener-Waterloo he practised medicine in Texas. He retired last year. He was a life member of the Canadian Medical Association and a medical director for Dominion Life Assurance Co. of Waterloo. Dr. Spohn is survived by four children, including Dr. James Spohn of Kitchener; 12 grandchildren, including Olympic skier Kathy Kreiner of Timmins, and five great* grandchildren. The funeral will be held in Waterloo on Thursday..

SPOHN, Dr. Philip Douglas At the Kitchener-Waterloo Hospital on Tuesday, April. 19, 1977, Dr. Philip Douglas Spohn, in his 91st year, of 209 King St. S., Waterloo.
Dr. Spohn, who was a former medical officer of health for Waterloo, had suffered a stroke recently. Born in Penetanguishene, he served overseas in the Medical Corps during the First World War and was involved in recruiting during the Second World War. Before moving to the K-W area, he practised medicine in Texas. He retired last year.
He was a life member of the Canadian Medical Association and a medical director for Dominion Life Assurance Co. of Waterloo. He was a member of the Church of the Holy Saviour, Waterloo. Predeceased by his wife, the former Maud Potvin; father, of Dr. James of Waterloo, Charles (Elizabeth) Shelton of Ottawa, Mrs. John (Mary) Cunningham of Waterloo and Mrs. H. O. (Peggy) Kreiner of Timmins. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren.
He is the last member of his family. Predeceased by three brothers and two sisters. Resting at the Edward R. Good Funeral Home, 171 King St. S., Waterloo, until 1:45 p.m. Thursday, then to the Church of the Holy Saviour for the funeral service at 2 p.m. Rev. Gerald Churchill officiating. Interment in Mount Hope cemetery, Waterloo. Donations to the building fund of the Church of the Holy Saviour would be appreciated as expressions of sympathy.
