Robbery victim dies in hospital

STRATHROY - Dr. Percy R. Urie, a 75-year-old physician, admitted to Middlesex General Hospital Monday night with injuries received during an armed robbery at his home died at 11:45 p.m. Tuesday.
Dr. Urie had undergone surgery Tuesday morning for injuries received during the robbery. He suffered multiple jaw fractures, two broken teeth and multiple cuts to the face and head. Michael Alan Morrow, James Robert Adams and Mathias Herman Wilden, all of Mt. Clemens, Mich., were remanded in custody to May 19 when they appeared in provincial judge's court in Sarnia Tuesday charged jointly with two counts of armed robbery.
The Monday night attack on Dr. Urie was the second in three months. The first occurred Feb. 16, when a man broke into the doctor's office-home on Watford's main street, pistol-whipped the doctor and escaped with about $300. During the first robbery, Mrs. Urie was sprayed with a chemical after telling the robber she was going to call police. At that time, Dr. Urie was taken to Middlesex Hospital for observation.
Monday night, two men burst into the doctor's office, beat him, and then forced Mrs. Urie and their son to the basement at gunpoint where they were tied up. Doug Urie managed to free himself in a few minutes and notified the Petrolia Ontario Provincial Police detachment. Roadblocks were set up and the three robbery suspects were apprehended at the entrance to the Blue Water Bridge by police from Point Edward, Sarnia and Petrolia.
Police have not yet determined whether anything except Mrs. Urie's watch had been stolen.
Inspector H. V. Pelz, OPP headquarters, Toronto, CIB, has been called into the investigation of the second pistol-whipping and robbery. He said an investigation was being conducted to determine whether one of the three men charged would also be charged with the February incident.
