  • Notes
    • Sherk, F. Arthur Born in Stayner, Ontario on May 20, 1932; passed away peacefully on September 23, 2015, at age 83. Arthur is survived by his loving wife Anne (Cressman), whom he married on June 26, 1954. He was predeceased by his parents Rev. J. Harold Sherk and Mila (Senor) Sherk. He was brother to Iva Taves (predeceased 2011), Harold Sherk and Mildred Kreider. His loving care, great example, and gentle leadership have forged a close family that loves to be together, including children: Janet (Terry) Young, Carol (Robert) Blake, Murray (Alison) Sherk, Donna (Dale) Barker; grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Matthew, Elaine (great-grandchildren Linden, Autumn), Peter (Holly); Brian, Heather (Carl Leisegang, great-grandchild Charlotte), Jeff, Karen (Greg Hoekstra); Emily; Elizabeth (Joel Westacott), and Jeff. Arthur grew up in Stayner, Sunnidale, Aylmer, Stouffville, Markham, and Kitchener (Centreville). He was educated at Victoria School, Kitchener Collegiate Institute, McMaster University, and the University of Toronto, graduating with a PhD in 1957. The University of Toronto immediately offered him a position as a Mathematics Professor, which he held for 37 years until his retirement while also serving at times as Assistant Dean of Graduate Studies and Vice-Principal of University College. Arthur and Anne particularly enjoyed two sabbaticals in Clemson, South Carolina, making many good friends with whom they spent several later winter stays after retirement, playing golf and visiting. Arthur and Anne lived in Toronto until 2010 when they retired to Parkwood Garden Homes in Waterloo. A humble servant, "Doc Sherk" was a long-time member of Banfield Memorial Missionary Church (now Wellspring Worship Centre), taking many leadership roles and being actively involved as a deacon and Bible class teacher for many years. He also served on the Board of Emmanuel Bible College. Professionally, he was involved in the Canadian Mathematical Society, serving as treasurer for 13 years. Arthur enjoyed playing golf, being an amateur historian, enthusiastically playing the ukelele, and joyfully playing with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
