- Death of Councillor John Small
Passes Away Suddenly At His Home Here Shortly After Midnight Last Night
The news of the death of Mr. John Small, Town Councillor which took place suddenly at his home on Hampton Street, Elmira, shortly after midnight last night from pneumonia, came as a shock to his relatives and to his numerous friends here.
While Mr. Small has not been in the best of health for some years, not since an attack of the flu in 1918, yet he was able to conduct his work and fulfil his duties as a member of the Town Council and take an active interest in Church and in any matter that was of benefit to the town. On Tuesday he seemed to have taken a cold and that night pneumonia developed and notwithstanding that everything possible was done by his physician and nurses, he passed peacefully away at 12: 15 this (Thursday) morning.
The late Mr. Small, who was in the 65th yearof his age, was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. David Small. He was born on a farm in the Township of Wellesley, near Macton, on the town line between Waterloo and Wellington Counties. Here he resided until his marriage in 1907 to Susanna Adam, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Alexander Adam of the same neighborhoood. Mr. and Mrs. Small continued to reside at the Small homestead for several years and about twenty years ago came to Elmira. Mr. Small took up the occupation of builder and during the intervening years between his coming to Elmira and the present time he erected and disposed of quite a number of residences of the better class.
Eleven years ago Mr. Small was elected a member of the Elmira Town Council and has continued to be a member of the Board since that time. During the years of office as a member of the Council he was one of its most active members and his work in overseeing the street paving, the beautification of the cemetery and other permanent improvements throughout the town will remain as a memory to his services. He had been most consistent and painstaking in the discharge of his duties as a member of the Board of Works of the Town Council. Mr. Small has also been an Elder of Gale Presbyterian Church for many years besides being Secretary-Treasurer of the Board of Management, and he will be greatly missed by the congregation, who came to depend upon him to look after much of the detail work of the Church Board.
The late Mr. Small leaves no family and besides his widow, who has the sincere sympahy of the community in her sorrow, there are three sisters and two brothers left to mourn his demise. The sisters and brothers are as follows: Mrs. J. McLaughlin of Palmerston; James Fannie, Elizabeth A. (Mrs. J. McMillan) and Grace, all of Galt and David of Marden. A sister, Catherine of Virden, Man., predeceased him about ten years ago.
The funeral will take place on Saturday afternoon at 2.30 o'clock from his late residence at 30 Hampton Street where the funeral service will be conducted by his pastor, the Rev. Mayson H. Sewell, B.D. Internment will be in the Elmira cemetery.
