- FORMER ARMY OFFICER DIES FRIDAY
Michael Dunke, 93, died at his home here Friday, after several months of illness, brought on by his age. Funeral services were conducted at the residence by Rev. Michael Yeagle, with an honorary guard of American Legion men standing in formation during the services, which ended with the soldier's last call, taps. But one comrade of the G. A. R. was able to be present, Mr. G. H. Uthoff. The body was taken to Michigan for burial.
Mr. Dunke, whose interest in the army and army men never faltered, presented the post with many historical items on his birthday anniversary last August. This list of gifts included pictures, orders and other papers of historical significance. He moved to Genoa with his family in 1906 and has lived here since that time.
Born in Canada, he moved to Cleveland with his parents as a boy and when he reached the age of 18 he enlisted in the 2nd Regiment of Dragoons, making a long wagon trip to St. Louis, then the western outpost of civilization. He took part in several Indian fights, the Mormon uprising and knew many of the famous characters of that day, including Buffalo Bill. Married in 1862, at the end of his enlistment, he reenlisted when Lincoln called the volunteers and was made a first sergeant, serving in the Union Army until May, 1865, when he was commissioned a 1st lieutenant of Company H, 103rd Regt. O. V. I. He was mustered out of service in June, 1865. Following the war he emigrated to Manistee Co., Michigan, with his wife and son, took up a quarter section farm and after clearing it, resided there for 40 years. He was the father of six children and during his years in Michigan was active in civic affairs and G. A. R. work. His surviving family consists of two sisters, Mrs. Mattie Stroud, of Detroit, Mich., and Mrs. Elizabeth Filer, of Chelsa, Mich.; one son, Mr. Collin Dunke, of Pleasanton, Mich.; four daughters, Mrs. Lulu Steele and Miss Eva Dunke, of Genoa, Ohio; Mrs. W. S. Lee, of Detroit, Mich., and Mrs. Richard Lang, of Arcadia, Mich.: and two grandchildren, Mr. Norman Steele, of Toledo, Ohio, and Mrs. Lawrence Molkenbur, of Woodville, Ohio.
