Notes |
- A Good Woman At Rest - Caroline Gallman Burkholder was born in Zurich, Ontario, May 14, 1845, and passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Frank Kelley, July 17, 1929, age 84 years, 2 months and 3 days. She was united in marriage to Daniel Burkholder, January 3, 1865. Sixty years ago the family moved to Shelby, Linn county, which was their home until sixteen years ago, when they removed to Brookfield. The husband preceded her in death January 28, 1914. She has since made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Frank Kelley. She leaves five sons, Rudolph and John, both of Browning; Wm., of St. Catharine; Dan, of Brookfield; Jay of Purdin; three daughters, Mrs. Anna Kelley of Brookfield; Nattie Miller of Purdin; Emma Guyer of Harrold, Texas; two brothers. John and Jacob Gallman of Zurich. Ontario; one sister, Mrs. Annie Jansen, of Detroit.
The funeral, conducted by the Rev. Carl A. McIntire. will take place from the home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Kelley, a mile and a half north of Brookfield. Saturday, July 20, at 2:00 p. m., and burial, under the direction of C. W. Hill, will be made in Rose Hill cemetery.
When people like Mrs. Burkholder have lived a good life to a good old age, a life spent in good works, benevolence and charity, a life of faithful service to God and the church, they have the full assurance of the blessedness and happiness of the life which is to be and which they enter into when they depart this life.
Just here the Scripture meets us positively: "For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him." We cannot take away death. but we can take the sting out of death. We must enter the conflict with the last enemy. "But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory, through our Lord Jesus Christ." At last there comes something authoritative. The moment we read a verse of inspiration like this, we feel as we do when we see a great meteoric stone -we say this is a piece of another planet.
