- FIND MRS. STAPLES' DEATH WAS CAUSED BY HUSBAND
That Mrs. Rachel Staples died from a fractured skull inflicted by an instrument in the hands of her husband, Harry Staples, was the verdict brought in by a coroner's jury at the morgue Saturday night. It concluded an inquest in which a number of witnesses told of unhappy marital relations which had existed between the Staples almost from the time they first took up their residence on Gladstone avenue 11 years ago and which culminated in the double tragedy.
Only a few witnesses were called and all the evidence was to the effect that the couple had lived in antipathy with each other for a long time. Recently Mr. Staples had collected $25 rent from a house which was their joint property and Mrs. Staples had had him summoned for non-support.
Mrs. W. McCabe, the next door neighbor of the Staples, stated that the trouble between the husband and his wife had become aggravated last spring. Staples and his wife had lived absolutely apart in the same house, he doing his cooking in their kitchen and she having a gas stove and cupboard fitted up in the diningroom.
The inquest was conducted by Coroner J. H. McConnell and Assistant Crown Attorney E. J. Murphy appeared for the crown.
