- The third local man to be wounded during the invasion, Lance-Cpl. John Joseph Romanoff, 23, son of Mrs. Doris Romanoff, 367 Guelph St., and the late Leo Romanoff, has been reported wounded in action. A telegram received by Mrs. Romanoff, Saturday, read as follows: "Regret to inform you Acting Lance-Cpl. John Joseph Romanoff, has been wounded in action, date and nature of wound not yet available. When addressing mail to hospital write in bold letters. When information available it will be forwarded as soon as received." Born in Poland, Lance-Cpl. Romanoff came to Canada when nine years of age. Prior to enlisting in June, 1940, he was employed as a painter. He arrived overseas in July, 1941.

One Soldier Dies; Another Is Wounded

Lance-Cpl. John Joseph Roman- off, who was reported wounded June 17, died as a result of the wounds, and Rifleman Douglas Herbert Ashton has been wounded in France, it was learned today. Lance-Cpl, Romanoff died June 9. He was the third local man reported injured in the invasion. His family had hoped that his wounds were only slight. They have had no details as to the nature and extent of the injury.

The 23-year-old soldier, son of Mrs. Doris Romanoff, 367 Guelph St., and the late Leo Romanoff, was born in Poland, and came to Canada at the age of nine. He was employed as a painter prior to enlisting in June, 1940. He reached overseas in July, 1941. Surviving in addition to his mother is a brother, Steve, and two sisters, Mrs. Walter (Stella) Vicary of London, and Mrs. Harry (Madeline) Dietrich, at home.
