  • Notes
    • The family of Peter Neu are deeply saddened to announce his passing January 6, 2025, on Lake Temagami.

In his 82 years on Turtle Island Pete was a son, a brother, a friend, a husband, a dad, a papa and an uncle. He knew both Cambridge Ontario and Lake Temagami to be home and will be remembered in both communities as highly regarded and well respected.

Pete was born in Kitchener Ontario April 10, 1942, and was the youngest child of Nicholas and Barbara Neu. He is predeceased by his brother, Nic. His siblings, John (Sybil), Susie (George), and Marg (Marsh) will miss their baby brother and his adventurous and independent spirit.

Pete lived the values of kindness, generosity, and industriousness that had been taught to him by his parents.

The Neu family had a farm on Banat Rd in Cambridge and that is where Pete and his siblings lived and raised their families. Pete's father had named the road after a German region in Romania which is where he and Barbara had emigrated from. Pete built his family home in 1968 on Banat Rd, his sister Marg also had her family home there and their sister Susie was around the corner on Brenda St. His nieces and nephews will remember the quality time spent with their uncle, auntie, and cousins there.

Pete started his family business, Petron Mechanical, in 1986. He and Patsy ran the business from their home until he retired in 2012 and left the business in the capable hands of his sons, grandson, and daughter-in-law. The Cambridge Family Restaurant was the favourite meeting place for the family every Thursday morning before the start of their respective workdays.

Pete was the devoted husband of his beloved Patsy (nee Twain) for 63 years. When Pete fell in love with Lake Temagami he fell in love with Patsy just the same. They raised 4 children together and were Nanny and Papa to nine grandchildren, Nicholas Miller (Ashley), Lindsey (Jason), Dylan, Taylor, Nathan (William), Steven (Joelyne), Laura (Dylan), Miles, Logan and nine great-grandchildren.

His children, Virginia (Tim), Teresa, Dan (Lisa), and Rick (Michelle) had the best dad ever. One who was willing, present, open-minded, and could speak the same language as them. He taught them the value of family, hard work, and love for their inherent homelands on Lake Temagami.

He was the favourite person of his grandchildren. He could fill spaces left by people who had passed before their time. The kids who call him Papa will miss his being there.

Pete's friends and family on Bear Island will remember the knowledge he shared and the kindness he gave. He was a respected elder of the Temagami First Nation and his presence in the community will be forever missed. He is at peace with the Creator and will now be felt among the trees and will be heard on the wings of the ravens.

The family wishes the extend their gratitude to the Bear Island Police and OPP for their assistance.

A celebration of life to honour Pete Neu will be held Saturday, February 1, 2025, from 1-4 p.m. at the Beaverdale Golf Club, 21-1171 Kossuth Rd, Cambridge. Light refreshments will be served.

In lieu of flowers a donation can be made in Peter's name to Rare rare@raresites.org 1679 Blair Rd, Cambridge, ON 519-650-9336 or the Cambridge Humane Society cambridgehumanesociety.org 1650 Dunbar Rd. Cambridge, ON 519-623-7722
