- LEDGER, Helen (Hamblin) (1924 - 2017) Passed away peacefully at Belmont House, Toronto on September 28th at the age of 93. Beloved mother of Douglas Ledger and Allison Patrick of Toronto, Brett Ledger and Patricia Olasker of Toronto, Sandra and Kenneth Ross of Utah, and Stephanie Ledger and Bradley Hill of Waterloo. Predeceased by Dr. Jack Ledger, husband for many years. Much loved Nana to Matthew, Andrew, Conor and Max Ledger, Mali Hill, as well as Jeremy and Anna Ross and great-granddaughter, Sabina Ross. Predeceased by mother, Margaret Murray, father, Gordon Hamblin and brother, Bob Hamblin. Born in Kitchener-Waterloo in 1924, Helen considered herself very fortunate to be the daughter of the proprietor of a chocolate factory - Smiles 'n Chuckles Ltd. For this reason, Helen greatly valued giving back to her community through volunteer work. Always creative and collaborative, she enjoyed organizing events supporting the arts. Helen was involved in fundraising for the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony and the start-up of the Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery. She served on a board overseeing the first provincial lottery, which raised funds for the Art Gallery of Ontario. Helen was also president of the Kitchener-Waterloo Gyrettes Club, which provided support programs for the Canadian National Institute for the Blind. As well, she was a longtime member of Trinity United Church in Kitchener. Helen enjoyed many years on Georgian Bay with family and friends. She traveled extensively in North America, Europe, Central America, and Asia. With an adventurous spirit, Helen backpacked on her own through Switzerland, Italy and Turkey when she was in her late sixties. Helen had a passion for connecting with others and a genuine acceptance of all. She will be fondly remembered as a woman who balanced elegance with grit throughout her life. A private service for family and friends will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery (www.kwag.ca), the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony (www.kwsymphony.ca) or the Belmont House Foundation (www.belmonthouse.com/SupportUs.aspx) in memory of Helen Ledger. The family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to the staff at Belmont House for the exceptional care that they provided for Helen over the past 14 years.
