Notes |
- LEDGER, John (Jack) (1923-2014) Passed away surrounded by family at Providence Healthcare Hospital, Toronto on Wednesday, January 15, 2014, at the age of 90. Beloved father of Douglas Ledger and Allison Patrick of Toronto, Brett Ledger and Patricia Olasker of Toronto, Sandra and Kenneth Ross of Minneapolis, and Stephanie Ledger and Bradley Hill of Waterloo. Devoted husband for many years of Helen Ledger of Toronto. Much loved Gramps, Poppa and Bubba to Matthew, Andrew, Conor and Max Ledger as well as Jeremy and Anna Ross. Predeceased by mother Mabel Ledger (1946), father Herbert Ledger (1975) and brother William Ledger (1974). He will be fondly remembered by his dear sister, Jean Miller, of Burlington. Jack served in the Royal Canadian Dental Corps from 1944-1947 and practised family dentistry in Kitchener for forty years until 1987. He was a past president of the Waterloo-Wellington Dental Society, the K-W Gyro and Senior Gyro Clubs, and the Children's International Summer Villages (CISV) Canada. Jack was a wise and trusted counsellor for many in his community. He was known for his ever-present sense of humour and his philosophical approach to life. Jack had an inquisitive mind and was an avid reader. An early adopter of the internet, he maintained his own website ("ledgerdomain"), and corresponded with many online friends. He enjoyed creating wood and soapstone bird carvings and watercolour paintings during his retirement. Jack loved the many years he spent with his family at their cottage on Georgian Bay. He also enjoyed travelling, especially a trip to his ancestral country of Ireland, and recently, a family cruise to celebrate his ninetieth birthday. Jack was deeply loved and will be missed by his family and friends. At Jack's request, there will be no visitation or funeral. A tribute in his honour will be held at the Westmount Golf & Country Club, Kitchener on Sunday, February 9 at 1:00 p.m., with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Providence Healthcare Foundation (www. providence.on.ca 416-285-3630) or the Kitchener-Waterloo YMCA Camp Fund (519-584-7479 ext. 205) in memory of Jack Ledger. The family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to the staff at Providence Healthcare for the exceptional care that they provided for Jack over the past several months.
